SELF-TALK includes all the thoughts in your mind.  

SELF-TALK CAN BE RANDOM OR PURPOSEFUL.

IT CAN BE SILENT OR SPOKEN OUT-LOUD.

CATEGORIES OF SELF-TALK:

Negative Self-Talk:

  •  Negative and critical​

 

  • People use negative self-talk without realizing it.

 

  • Inconsistency and poor performances lead to negative self-talk.​

 

  • Example: "I CANT" or

  • I'll never make this shot."

Positive Self-Talk:

  • Encouraging and Motivational

 

  • Keeps it REAL tells you exactly what you need to do and where to FOCUS. 

 

  • Example: "That was a tough move!"

Neutral Self-Talk:

  • Thoughts that are completely random and have nothing to do with sports or performing.

  • Example: "What will I have for dinner tonight?"

Intructional Self-Talk:

  • Connects to positive self-talk​

 

  • Uses instructions as part of the talk to maintain focus

  • Example: "Break the wrist and follow through"
